OWSD Centennial Trail Hike June 2009
The monthly event for June was an 11.5 mile hike on the Centennial Trail.
OWSD members Linda Harris and Joyce Hannan were joined by new members Susan
Campo, Michele Huizenga, and Alice McNall on the hike from Elk Creek Trailhead
to Alkali Creek TH. The Black Hills are especially beautiful now with many wild
flowers in bloom. Linda organized the hike, and her husband Neil shuttled the
group to the trailhead

Photo 1. We gathered at the Rochford Trailhead on the Mickelson trail.
Photo 2. We started up the path. It was a mix of snow and mud, and I thought maybe we needed hiking boots rather than snowshoes.
Photo 3. As we progressed, there was more snow on the trail.

Heavy fog blanketed the butte
Being outdoor women who “go with the flow,” we set out on our hike.
The fog was heavy, so we could not see the prairie below or the Black Hills to the south.
We reached the summit after about an hour.
As we reached the trailhead, the fog was just beginning to lift.
We saw a Marmot along the trail.

It was an absolute blast and I cannot wait to get back out into the field.
I happened to be on the phone to my father at the time, he was asking me if
we had caught anything yet. Just as I was about to say no, I dropped the phone -
which landed just a couple inches from the hole - and started reeling in this
gorgeous walleye. I was fishing with two buddies of mine on a very cold and
windy South Dakota day; they were not happy with me because it was the only fish
we caught all day, so I had bragging rights. This long day of ice fishing is
still talked about.
This 23 inch walleye was caught on a slough just 8 miles northwest of Webster, SD, back in January.

I'm finding out that killing your animal on opening day is a big deal, so I'm proud. The best part of the trip was being with my husband and family.
