Fly Fishing In The Black Hills

Join us in the beautiful Black Hills for a day of fly fishing. This event will only accommodate 5 people. No need to be experienced in the sport as we will have instructors to help. We will meet at Outdoor Campus West in Rapid City and travel together to Deerfield Lake. Fly rods & waders will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own. Please bring a packed lunch and water. Sun protection at this time of the year is a good idea along with bug spray. Please keep an eye on the weather in Hill City on the day of the event incase rain gear is needed.  Please note - if you have not paid your membership fees, they must be paid to attend this event (you can pay at the event). Also, a waiver of liability must be signed before leaving the campus.

Plan B: Still meet at Outdoor Campus West but we will do a casting session inside and fish in the pond between rain storms

Hunters Pointe Sporting Clays

Time:  9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Central Time

This is an opportunity to shoot a National Sporting Clay course near Humboldt SD.  It will allow you to become more comfortable shooting your own shotgun in a field type setting.  This will be an opportunity to shoot sporting clays which is a form of clay pigeon shooting that has been described as golf with a shotgun. 

We will meet at Hunters Pointe Sporting Clays.  You must register so there will  be enough instructors there to guide you through the course. Contact Julie/Alana to secure your spot!  There is a $5.00 charge for this event with OWSD picking up the balance. 

Take exit 379 (HWY 19)  near Humboldt and go 2 miles south. Take a left (east) onto 260th Street and go 1.5 miles on unpaved road.  Hunters Pointe is on your right (south) side.  Please arrive by 9:15 a.m. so we can gather as a group and discuss the options available, safety, scoring techniques (if we choose as a group to keep score or just shoot and have fun)  and break into groups.  We will do a staggered start so we will all hopefully be done about the same time.  Once the groups have been organized we will break off and enjoy the course.  OWSD has some shooting vests for you to use if you wish.  Also we will have carts to use to put your water/shells in for easy carrying. 


Make sure you have good sturdy boots that you can walk in.  You can bring your own shotgun if you wish or OWSD will have

12 gauge shotguns for you to use.  Let Julie/Alana know if you need to use one.  Shotgun shells will be supplied for the 12 and 20 gauge shotguns along with eye and ear protection.  DRESS ACCORDING TO WEATHER!  Bug spray will be available for those needing it.  You may want to bring your own sunscreen along with your own sunglasses. 


We will need to let the instructors and Hunters Pointe know how many of you are coming so a pre-sign up is a must.  There is a $5.00 charge for this event with OWSD picking up the balance.  Everyone will be required to sign a waiver for OWSD before we start.  All you need is your gun and water!  Come and join us for a fun day of shooting!!

Kayaking the Niobrara

This event will include kayaking on the Niobrara with an overnight campout. Bring your kayaks and enjoy a day of the kayaking down the Niobrara River. OWSD will put in kayaks at Nenzel, Nebraska around noon and will kayak down the river for 4-5 hours. This event is a family event – open to all OWSD members. Overnight camping will occur at the location where you will get off the river. The place is a private residence and they have offered to let OWSD have a campout. You will need to bring your own camping gear. If choosing to stay overnight, people are welcome to go to Valentine and kayak down the commercial part of the Niobrara on Sunday. This would be an intermediate event. Doris will assist in the Kayaking help. OWSD waivers must be signed before the event starts. 

Materials for Event: Bring your own Kayaks, suitable to float down the river. Doris is able to get some kayaks for people to use on a first come, first serve basis. If you need a kayak, you must let Doris know by contacting her at Lifejackets or PFD are required for this event and you must be responsible for having one. 
Other items needed and not provided by OWSD: Water shoes are preferable as the Niobrara River can have sharp rocks or items that you may not be able to see in the water. Other items to bring would include; sunscreen, bug repellent, sunglasses and hats for sun protection for the face and extra water to drink for the trip down the river. Lunch will be on your own. If you choose to stay overnight, you will need your own camping gear. You will also be responsible for your own meals. Cooking facilities are available.
This is a no cost event but a donation to the cabin owners is appreciated.

Please bring a packed lunch, your camping gear and food if you plan to camp overnight on Saturday Night. Transportation will be provided back to your vehicles.
Plan B Rain or Shine, Event happens. We can kayak in the rain. If River is unsafe or if there is unsafe weather conditions such as lightening the event would be cancelled.
Directions: Drive to highway 20. If coming from the east, you will travel through Kilgore. Continue on highway 20 to Nenzel. Turn Left or south for 8 miles. Take the road next to the bridge and turn right. If you cross the bridge you have gone too far.
If coming from the west, go through Cody before you hit Nenzel. Turn right going south and follow the same directions as above.

Backpack Camping Overnight in Black Elk Wilderness Area

Join your fellow outdoor women on a backpack camping trip in the Black Elk Wilderness in the Black Hills of South Dakota on May 19 and 20. Instructors Cindy Longmire and Luke Mickelson, both experienced hikers with SD Game Fish and Parks, will lead us on a hike through the Wilderness area. Participants will camp in the Wilderness area overnight and each participant will carry all the gear they need on their own back. The Game, Fish and Parks will provide 8 backpack kits for our use, which will contain the following items: backpack, tent, sleeping bag, stove and basic mess (silverware/plate) kit. Instructors will bring water filters and a first aid kit.

Time and Location: On May 19, we will meet the instructors at the Iron Creek Trailhead at 11 am Mountain Time. Instructors will then assist everyone with packing their backpacks. Vehicles will be left at the trailhead. Participants will carry their gear while hiking to the camping location. Breaks can be taken as needed along the trail. Participants should expect to return to their vehicles by 12 noon on Sunday the 20th.

Price: There is no cost for a Wilderness permit for camping or parking. Participants will pay only their food costs for backpack camping meals. The evening meals for Saturday and Sunday breakfast will be purchased in advance by the organizers and the meals will be lightweight and backpack friendly (freeze dried). Participants are encouraged to dress for May in the Black Hills which means dressing in layers and bringing extra dry socks. Wear sturdy hiking shoes. Participants should also bring a water bottle, flashlight and personal care items. There are no bathroom facilities in the wilderness, so be prepared! Pack a light weight set of rain gear and a stocking cap and gloves or mittens (just in case).

Register early: Because the GFP has 8 backpack kits for our use, class size will be limited. If you have your own backpack equipment, please let Julie know when you register for the class. It is important that you get your reservation and food reimbursement check in early, to reserve your spot in the class. Let Julie know if you have any diet restrictions or if you will need to bring your own food. A variety of meals will be provided but if you have a preference or food aversion/allergy, let Julie know when you register.

Restrictions: There is no age restriction, however everyone must be able to carry their own 20 lb pack. No minors can attend without a parent or guardian present. Participants must be able to carry their pack on their backs and to hike 5 miles over moderate to sometimes strenuous terrain. No open fires are allowed.

Pheasant Hunt

This will be an organized pheasant hunt near Lennox, South Dakota. It should be a good time to get a few birds and enjoy others company. 
We will all meet at the home of Julie Sasker. Let Julie know that you are coming and she can give you directions on how to get there. Contact Julie to reserve your spot! This day will cost you $50 per person and you must pay when you register as there will only be 15 hunting spots. This will allow you, if you are lucky, to take 3 birds each plus the opportunity to hunt on private land. 
Please arrive by 8:00 a.m. so we can sharpen our shooting skills by shooting a few clay birds. We will be leaving to start hunting promptly at 10:00 a.m. We will carpool for short trip to the hunting area. There we will proceed to walk the tall grass for birds. Hunting dogs have been secured and will meet us at the hunting area.
Pack a sack lunch so we can eat in the field and plenty of water to drink. Make sure you have good sturdy boots that you can walk in. You can bring your own shotgun and shells if you wish or OWSD will have 12 gauge shotguns for you to use and let Julie know if you need to use one. You will need an orange vest and hat. And most important don’t forget your pheasant license and dress according to weather! 
We will be watching a hunting safety video before we leave for the field. If you are not a member of OWSD you will need to pay the membership fee of $40.00 plus the hunting price of $50.00. You must also have a Hunt Safe Certificate if under the age of 18. We are hunting private land so the birds will be released a day or two ahead of hunt. 
We will hunt approximately 3-4 hours and come back to the house to clean birds. Bring Ziploc bags to put your cleaned birds in and a cooler to keep them in for your trip home. 
We will need to let the dog handlers and the landowner know how many of you are coming so pre sign up is a must. Everyone will be required to sign a waiver for OWSD before we leave for hunting.
