Snowshoeing at Good Earth State Park & Cross Country Skiing

Are you experiencing the winter blues? Come join your fellow OWSD members for some outdoor winter activities! This will be a two-part wintertime adventure! On March 3, 2018 we will meet at 9:30 am CST at the newest State Park in South Dakota, Good Earth State Park. This beautiful park has a very interesting history which will be explained to us while we snowshoe the park. Our snowshoeing adventure from 10 am CST to 12 pm CST will be led by a naturalist with the Good Earth Park.
We will meet up afterwards for lunch at the park facility or at the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls. Bring your own lunch, water and snacks. After lunch we are off for another adventure in cross-country skiing with more great naturalists from the Game, Fish and Parks at The Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls. We will meet them at the Campus at 12:30 pm CST for cross country ski fitting. Instruction will be provided on how to wear and use cross-country skis, and then we will go explore Sertoma Park with the guidance of a naturalist from the Game, Fish and Parks. Participants will ski from 1 pm to 330 pm CST (or whenever you would like to stop). If there is no snow, we will still hike the trails of each park with the naturalist. This is a family oriented event is open to both children and adults. Participants should use their judgment on the age of children to bring along, as younger children may need to be carried or require extra time learning the techniques. This is a physically active event but participants may go at their own pace and the terrain will not be steep.
Use of the snowshoes and cross country skis are free and the naturalists at each park will help you get fitted with the correct size and give you a lesson on how to use them. There is no charge for this event. However all participants in the guided OWSD hikes/treks must be OWSD members for insurance purposes. Annual membership for people over 15 years old is $40, and is $20 for people younger than 15. Memberships can be paid for on the date of the event.
Participants should dress in layers to stay warm. Wear winter boots, warm socks, hats and gloves/mittens. When snowshoeing you will wear your own winter boots. When cross-country skiing you will wear your own heavy winter socks and boots that are provided by Game, Fish and Parks. If it is sunny, remember your sunglasses because the sun’s reflection off the snow can be very strong. Bring your own snacks, water and lunch. An entrance pass into the Good Earth State Park is required. Daily passes are $6 and yearly passes are $30.
There is no pre-registration fee but please let the event organizer, Julie DeJong, know that you will be attending by February 23rd. This will allow her to coordinate the staffing necessary with the naturalists from both parks. You can contact her through email at Please let her know the ages and names of participants, and if they any physical restrictions.
