October 21-22, 2017
Join the Outdoor Women of South Dakota for a hiking adventure in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Members will be able to stay at One Spirit Retreat Center near Deadwood, SD.
The Spearfish Canyon Hike will begin at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge, 10619 Roughlock Falls Road, Lead SD. It is found along the Spearfish Canyon byway, ALT 14 Highway that runs from Spearfish, SD to Lead, SD.
The One Spirit Retreat Center is located at 12032 Sacred Mountain Place, Deadwood SD. To reach One Spirit, you must travel Highway 385. From the north (Deadwood), travel south on Highway 385. The Center lies on 65 acres of wooded property and is adjacent to Forest Service property. Rooms in the lodge can hold 4 people per room.
Hikers will meet at 1 pm on Saturday, October 21st at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. The hike will take from 2 to 4 hours, depending upon how many trails the hiker chooses to take part in.
Although it is not required for the participant to join in both the hike and the overnight stay at the One Spirit Lodge, it is highly recommended. OWSD members will meet at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge at 1 pm on Saturday, October 21st. Members will hike the trails through beautiful Spearfish Canyon. We will have Shannon Percy, District Park Supervisor with the Game, Fish and Parks along to give us a tour of the GFP facilities in Spearfish Canyon. The Roughlock Falls trail will be the first trail of the day. The grade is mild and it is perfect for children or people who have difficulty hiking uphill. This trail follows the stream, and you will see beautiful ponds and waterfalls. Little Spearfish Falls is also nearby and is a short hike. Interpretive signs describe the flora and fauna of the Spearfish Canyon floor. The Devils’ Bathtub hike provides more beautiful scenery as the trail follows a stream up to some natural pools (bathtubs). Hikers will likely get their feet wet on this trail, as the trail weaves in and out of the stream. Participants can choose which hikes they want to take part in.
The group will meet at the Brown Rock Sports Café, 360 Lower Main Street, in Deadwood for supper at 6 pm.
During the hike, participants should bring their own snacks, water bottle and meals. A large water cooler will be provided to fill personal water bottles. Hikers should wear multiple layers of clothing and sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Plan accordingly to the weather forecast.
There is no cost for the hike. All participants must be OWSD members for liability purposes.
Because the One Spirit Retreat Center needs reservations to save the rooms, a registration fee of $40 per person is required to stay at the lodge on Saturday, October 21st which includes a full breakfast on Sunday, October 22nd. Specialty meals (gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and sugar free are $2 extra).
This registration fee should be sent in by September 22nd, 2017. If you would like to reserve the same room for multiple people, please indicate that on your reservation form. Questions, registration form or more information concerning the event can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
