Fort Sisseton Frontier Christmas Celebration
GF&P News Release
Prepare for the Christmas holidays as the pioneers did at the 15th Annual
Frontier Christmas at Fort Sisseton Historic State Park on Saturday and Sunday,
Dec. 9 and 10. Activities begin at noon each day and end with a tree lighting
ceremony at 3:45 p.m. with many hours of fun throughout the afternoon.
“This is your chance to celebrate a time honored holiday at an authentic 1864
military outpost,” said Dave Daberkow, Park Supervisor. “Join us as we recreate
the events of Dakota Territory as preparations are made for the Christmas
holidays.”
Throughout the day, visitors can learn how to make numerous holiday decorations
including stringing popcorn for garland, and making snowflake and Christmas
ornaments in the North Barracks Visitor Center. In the barracks kitchen you can
make your own bread creation and have it baked in the fort’s authentic wood
burning stove. Visitors can also stop by the barracks mess hall and taste
freshly churned butter. Members of the Prairie Fiber Arts Guild will be on hand
to demonstrate how wool and other natural fibers are made into clothing.
A number of artists will provide musical entertainment to round out the holiday
setting. A cleaned out soldiers' barracks room provides the setting and seating
for John and Thealoy Pallansch as they perform favorite Christmas carols. For
the second year the Sisseton High School choir directed by Lehla Pietz will
share the stage on Saturday afternoon and the Webster Madrigal Singers directed
by Margaret Trefz will perform on Sunday. Special dulcimer music will be
performed by Lois Beckner.
Also make plans to join horse teams and drivers as they take visitors on sleigh
rides throughout the winter wonderland. Or, stroll the fort grounds and visit
the blacksmith and post carpenter as they demonstrate their professions. Stop by
the hospital, the doctor's quarters, and commanding officer’s quarters and visit
with the various men and women of the Fort. Father Christmas will be on hand to
share Christmas wishes with everyone. At 3:45 p.m. each day, members of the
Frontier Army light the candles on the Fort Christmas tree and everyone joins in
Christmas carols.
There is no cost to participate although a state park entrance license is
required which can be purchased at the park entrance. Concessions will be
available both days. Fort Sisseton is located 12 miles southwest of Lake City.
