From the President

Change -can you feel it in the air and on the winds? Change is defined as to make or become different, alter; to take, put, or use in place of another; to give and receive, exchange, switch. What is it about change that makes us wince, and think negative thoughts immediately? Is it the weather? We know that fall is here and the weather this week is looking like it is going to change quickly. more

Comments from the “New” Editor
Linda Harris

The Outdoor Women of South Dakota (OWSD) newsletter is still in transition. First, it changed from a printed format that was mailed to members to an electronic version found on our website at www.OWSD.org. Charon Geigle served as the newsletter editor for the past two years and coordinated the media conversion with our webmaster, Judy Austad. Charon has now stepped down as OWSD secretary and newsletter editor. On behalf of the OWSD Board of Directors, I would like to thank Charon for all her efforts. She devoted a lot of time to the newsletter and strived to make it a worthwhile benefit of membership. It has been a quality endeavor.

Effective with this October issue, I am assuming the duties as editor of the newsletter. I am working with Louise Engelstad who will edit articles and also do some writing. We hope many people will contribute a variety of articles.

This is your newsletter. We request and appreciate your feedback. Please tell us what you like, don’t like, and would like to see included. E-mail us at http://www.owsdnews@hills.net/.

March of the Penguins
Linda Harris

My husband and I recently went to the movie, "March of the Penguins." All I knew about the film was based on a newspaper review:

Luc Jacquet's gripping documentary, packed with more romance and nail-biting adventure than a summer of tent pole movies, chronicles the arduous, incredible journey of Antarctica's emperor penguins to their remote breeding grounds, drawing you in emotionally to such an extent that you'll be shocked back to reality when the end credits remind you a crew of humans had to be present to capture the drama. Narrated by Morgan Freeman. (Los Angeles Times) Rated (G).

It is unlikely that anyone reading this will travel to Antarctica. If you would like to experience part of this continent through film and have an interest in the drama of animal survival, then I recommend this movie. It’s an amazing story and beautifully filmed.

Fall Colors
Linda Harris

Autumn is here, visually announced by the changing leaves. Several factors including environmental conditions and plant genetics influence fall colors.

Plant color results from a number of pigments that perform a variety of functions in the leaves. Chlorophyll is the green pigment of most plants. It is produced in the chloroplasts of leaf, stem, and flower cells. During photosynthesis, chlorophyll captures the sun's energy, which is then used to manufacture sugars from carbon dioxide and water. more
