April/May 2006

Greetings to all!! WOW! What a fantastic last few weeks OWSD has been having. April 7, 8, and 9 was a fantastic weekend of classes and a great presentation you can read about in the convention article in this newsletter. What you will not be able to read about or know is the friendships, the accomplishments, and the triumphs that the weekend held for all who attended. The first time to pull a bow back, the first time using your hands to mix the ingredients for deer breakfast sausage, the first time turning on your GPS and actually knowing how to use it, the first time making a dish in a Dutch oven--and the list goes on for each and every class. more

2006 OWSD Convention
Submitted by May Schaefer, President
Outdoor Women of South Dakota.

WOW!! What a great weekend of classes, presentations, opportunities!! The annual OWSD Convention was held April 7, 8, and 9 in Mitchell, South Dakota. The weekend started off with an icebreaker sponsored by Cabela’s in Mitchell at their store with great food provided by Cabela’s, Howard Cold Storage & Lockers in Howard, SD, and by board members who brought munchies, crackers, wild game, and drinks. The ladies met each other, visited, and then it was off to shop with Cabela’s generous discount for the evening. more

Thank you. I would like to take a moment to thank each and every one of the sponsors across the state that donated trips, events, merchandise and money to the recent OWSD Annual Convention that was held April 7, 8, and 9, 2006, in Mitchell. The support that you have shown OWSD over the years has been great! We thank you and appreciate you as we strive to promote hands on education and participation in outdoor activities with a primary focus on women and children.
Thank you.

Second Sunday Gathering for March (West River)
Boarding House Gulch Geocache

Linda Harris

This was the plan: Join Outdoor Women of SD on Sunday, March 12 to look for a geocache near Pactola Reservoir. The site is the old Methodist Church Camp from 1924-1955. Currently the water level in Pactola is so low that the once submerged foundations of the old camp can be seen. The hike is about 3/4 mile from the starting point. Everyone is welcome. We will talk about geocaching and demonstrate using a GPS unit. Dress appropriately for the weather. Wear good hiking shoes or boots. Bring water, snacks, and a GPS unit if you have one.

The reality: Saturday, March 11th was a beautiful day with temperatures above freezing. The Black Hills had had very little snow all winter, and there was no snow on the ground—until Sunday. Snow began falling during the evening and continued through the morning. I started getting calls asking if the SSG was still on. I said I would be there if people came. more
