From the President

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I would like to send greetings of a happy New Year 2006 to all of the members and sponsors of OWSD. Wow, what an opportunity that we have here. We have 365 days in the year 2006 to plan activities that involve the outdoors! OK, yes, I know that we all work and have family and work commitments.

However, what if you look at just taking 2 days a month--24 days in the New Year--and set them aside for a great outdoor adventure with your family! Plan a weekend trip to fish, hike, kayak down one of the many rivers, camp and cook over a fire, or just to be together to enjoy nature.
And then during the month look for ways to take an hour or half-hour 2-3 times per week and get outside. Fill the bird feeder, go for a walk in the snow and hear and fill the crunch of the frozen snow and ground under your feet, or take a young person ice fishing or on snowmobile ride for the first time. Then as the weather warms for the summer, plant a tree or a garden, take a ride on the bike path, hike a hill that you have never been to before, watch the majestic South Dakota sunset, or go trout fishing and feel the cool water against you legs as you stand in the fast running stream. And then as fall comes, watch the migration of the ducks and geese as they head south for warm weather. Watch as the leaves turn color and float to the ground. Maybe you will rake the leaves up to just jump in the piles and hear the crunching noise and feel like a kid again! Go ahead and apply for a license to hunt deer, elk, antelope or pheasants. If you have never hunted before, call another OWSD member and ask to go along on the first hunt to learn those new skills and to make some memories and a new friend.

OWSD is not just about classes and events. It is also about calling each other and doing things together. It is about not being afraid to try and about having someone there to teach and mentor without judging or laughing if we try and fail. Or better yet, OWSD is about having someone to say “great, excellent job” when we shoot our first pheasant, make our first meal in the Dutch oven, or climb to the top of Harney Peak. Make room this year for some outdoor time with your family, with your friends, and with your fellow OWSD members. Have a great outdoor adventure in the New Year!

Living in the Midwest means living with winter weather. We can choose to stay indoors as much as possible and hope for spring, or we can choose to go outside and enjoy cold-weather activities.

Dressing wisely for cold temperatures will help keep you safe and comfortable and make your outdoor activities more enjoyable. Bulky parkas, cotton long underwear, and itchy wool have been replaced with high-tech, lightweight fabrics and a layered system to help retain body heat and move perspiration away from the skin. Here is a brief outline for dressing for cold weather. For more information, visit with knowledgeable staff at retailers specializing in cold weather gear and the newer fabrics.

Layering. For the first layer next to the skin, choose long underwear products made of synthetic microfibers, such as polypropylene, which draws perspiration away from the body (wicking). Avoid cotton because it absorbs and holds moisture close to the skin, causing you to feel cold.

The second layer provides insulation. Fleece works well. It is lightweight and dries quickly.

The third layer should be as windproof and waterproof as possible.

Hands and feet are especially vulnerable to cold weather. Layering works here, too. Use polypropylene glove liners and socks. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Pack extra gloves and socks and change them if they become damp or wet.

Cover your head or a lot of body heat can be lost. Worry about bad hair later. Again, wool or fleece are good choices for wicking away sweat and providing insulation. Face masks are an option for especially cold and windy days.

State Parks Host First Special Events of the New Year
South Dakota state parks will kick off the new year with two Walk in the Park programs that allow participants to experience the sights and sounds of nature during a South Dakota winter. The following Walk in the Park programs will take place on Jan. 7:
-- “Snowshoe Social” Walk in the Park, 1 p.m. at Fort Sisseton Historic State Park near Lake City. Staff will teach basic snowshoeing skills and lead a nature walk through the area. Shoeshoes will be provided. In the event of no snow, a hike will be held. Participants are asked to meet at the North Barracks. Info: (605) 448-5474.
-- “Animal Signatures” Walk in the Park, 2 p.m. at Farm Island Recreation Area near Pierre. The hour-long guided walk will take participants on the island’s trails as they look for signs of animals and discuss the natural history of the area. The walk will start at the island trailhead. Ice, Is It Ever Safe?
Game, Fish & Parks E-Newsletter, December 13, 2004
When is ice safe? Unless you’re at an indoor hockey/skating rink, there is no sure answer. Ice is tricky, and just because a lake or stream is frozen does not mean the ice is safe.
"A lake or stream appearing to be frozen can be very dangerous," said Game, Fish and Parks Safety Administrator Al Bahe. "Every year, people are injured or killed when they do not understand and respect it." more

Registration for Ninth Annual Mickelson Trail Trek

Registration for the 9th Annual Mickelson Trail Trek is now available at the trail’s website, www.MickelsonTrail.com. Game, Fish and Parks officials are encouraging bicyclists to sign up early to ensure a spot in the Trek, which will be held Sept. 15 - 17, 2006.
According to officials, the 2005 Trail Trek attracted a record 530 bicyclists, a 40 percent increase over attendance in 2004.
“Over the years, our goal was to increase the number of riders in the Trek,” said Harley Noem, Northern Hills regional supervisor for the Division of Parks and Recreation. “We were pleased to break 400 in 2004, but last year’s attendance simply shattered that record. I think this is just the beginning for the Trek. Because of the popularity of the ride, we are anticipating the number of riders to continue to increase each year, which may force us to consider capping this event. In fact, I would encourage riders to sign up as early as possible this year to ensure a spot on the ride.”
The annual supported ride highlights the George S. Mickelson Trail as it winds through the heart of the Black Hills from Edgemont to Lead/Deadwood. The ride began in 1998 as a celebration of the completion of the rails-to-trails project. The Trek continues today to introduce new bicyclists to the trail and to thank supporters for their long-standing enthusiasm for the trail.
Riders on the Trail Trek will ride 109 miles of the trail over three days, from Friday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 17. The $150 registration fee includes the trail pass, shuttle service, commemorative souvenirs, refreshments and some meals during each day's ride. Riders are responsible for accommodations and mechanical support. The ride is open to all bicyclists 14-years of age or older.
Pre-registration is required by July 1, 2005. Registration can be completed online by visiting www.MickelsonTrail.com and by following the "Trail Trek" link. Materials for registering through the mail are available by calling the Black Hills Trails office at (605) 584-3896 or by printing the registration form found on the trail website.
