From the President

Wow, every year at this time in the summer we all stand back and say, “Where has the summer gone.” And then we start planning on what we can get packed into the next 2-3 weeks before school starts and we are all looking into the face of fall. What is it about summer that makes us all want to hang onto every minute of it until it is gone?   more

 Second Sunday Gathering in June.
Linda Harris

The Second Sunday Gathering (SSG) for June was a bicycle ride on the Mickelson Trail with a discussion on bike and helmet fit. Rain appeared imminent, but a few people showed up and the event proceeded. The rain held off, and we enjoyed a nice ride with just a few sprinkles at the end.

We started at the Mickelson Trail Tracy Park Trailhead in Hill City and rode south toward Custer and Crazy Horse Memorial. This section of the trail follows Spring Creek. At one of the first bridge crossings we saw a family of busy marmots. (Maybe they were friends, not family. Guess I don’t know for sure.) Horses farther up the trail often come up to the fence to watch the trail users go by. Trees and shrubs had leafed out and the grasses were growing tall. Blooming wild flowers added color to the green. The Mickelson Trail changes with the seasons. Try to experience it throughout the year.

South Dakota’s 114-mile George S. Mickelson Trail was completed in 1998. The trail follows the historic Deadwood to Edgemont Burlington Northern rail line through the heart of the Black Hills. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders encounter more than 100 converted railroad bridges, four hardrock tunnels, and many interpretive signs along the scenic route. User fees support trail maintenance. Trail passes are $2 daily or $10 annual and are available at the 14 trailheads, authorized vendors, and some state park offices.

For more information on the trail and the annual 3-day Mickelson Trail Trek in September, check the website: mickelsontrail.com.

What I did on my Summer Vacation
Ginny Herreid

As some of you who know me, know that I love to be on a river. It doesn’t matter a lot which river, but I prefer smaller and more remote rivers to the large busy Might Missouri. This year I became acquainted with the White River of South Dakota.

First of all, I learned that the White River originates in Nebraska, in Sioux County, in the pan handle, not far from the community of Harrison. From there, the White wanders its way eastward  more
