From the President
May Schaefer

Greetings to all outdoor women! The summer days are speeding by lately. With the fairs approaching and the anticipation of another school year starting in just a few short weeks, I wonder are you ready? Are you ready to settle back into the routine of homework, sports and music events, and running your children to activities? You know the routine--studying after supper at night, making sure the backpack is ready for the next day, the uniform is ready for the next game, and they have lunch money and all the right school supplies. Are you ready? more

Kayak Trip 2006
Submitted by May Schaefer, President OWSD

What has 3 canoes, 17 kayaks, 19 women, 4 men and a lot of camping gear?? The annual OWSD Kayak trip for 2006!! This year the trip was guided and led by Caleb Gilkerson with Dakota Adventures out of Pierre, South Dakota. It was held July 7, 8, and 9 on the Cheyenne River about 50 miles west of Pierre. And what an adventure it was!

Thursday evening we met at Dakota Adventures to become familiar with the area we were going to be kayaking....more

Brazilian Frontier Adventure
By Jeanie Votava

Have you ever wanted to fish for Peacock Bass in the Amazon while fresh water pink dolphins surface near your boat, chattering Blue and Gold Macaws pass by overhead, and a Caiman watches you from the river’s outer edge?

Maybe you want to visit an Indian tribe whose culture has been almost untouched by the outside world until the 21st century? You can stay overnight if you dare.

Do you want to rope a twenty foot long Anaconda or canoe down a winding jungle stream staying clear of the overhanging razor grass that can slit your throat if your not careful while you’re watching for different varieties of birds, bats, flowers, fauna, reptiles and fish with very sharp teeth?   more

Sign Up Soon for Outdoors-Woman Workshop
News Release from SD Game, Fish & Parks

Anyone who is still considering attending the 2006 Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop at Lake Poinsett is encouraged to register as soon as possible. The workshop will be held September 22-24, 2006, at the Lake Poinsett United Methodist Camp, near Arlington.

“This is a pretty high-demand event and classes are filling up quickly,” according to Chad Tussing, education services coordinator for the Game, Fish and Parks Department.

There are 31 classes being offered over the three-day weekend of Sept. 22-24. “While there is still plenty of space left in the workshop, some of the more popular classes like fly tying and kayaking are filling rapidly,” Tussing said. “If someone is really interested in participating in a specific class, I’d recommend they register very soon.”

For more information call the Game, Fish and Parks Department at (605) 773-3485. To use the online registration system, please visit the South Dakota BOW Web site: http://www.state.sd.us/gfp/DivisionWildlife/BOW/BOWIndex.htm.

Bowhunter Education Courses Scheduled

Numerous archery education courses are available across South Dakota for those who need to participate in one before archery elk and deer seasons open this fall.

South Dakota archery hunters between the ages of 11 and 16, all first-time archery hunters regardless of age and all archery elk hunters in South Dakota are required to complete the internationally recognized International Bowhunter Education Foundation's Bowhunter Education Course.

Hunters may apply for a license without course certification, but the course must be completed prior to receiving their big game license from the Game, Fish and Parks licensing office.

The IBEF course emphasizes hunter safety, ethics and responsibility, and offers plenty of advice about becoming a more proficient and conscientious bowhunter.

Upcoming courses include:
 Aug. 1 and 2 - one course in Rapid City.
 Aug. 5 - two courses in Mitchell.
 Aug. 11 and 12 - one course in Sioux Falls.
 Aug. 12 - one course in Sioux Falls.
 Aug. 13 _ one course in Yankton.
 Aug. 26 - one course in Sioux Falls and one in Custer.
 Sept. 9 - one course in Madison.
 Sept. 23 - one course in Sioux Falls.
 Sept. 24 - one course in Yankton.

Most courses require pre-registration and many classes fill up quickly, so archery hunters are advised to register early. Contact information can be found on the Game, Fish and Parks Web site:
